Ohhh god. I was at my grandparents' house tonight and they were watching The O'Reilly factor...they're having a field day with this. Once they got to the segment about how Perez Hilton was being "discriminatory" and "oppressive" to Miss America's blissfully ignorant beliefs I had to excuse myself despite the fact that they bought me dinner.

I don't get how america can be finally be cool with interracial marriage (excluding the appalachian states and the bible belt but seriously fuck them anyway) but two dudes going at it is just too much for their poor little brains to handle. You'd think we would have made, you know, progress or something.

Yeah we were making progress, then the last 8 years happened and we took a HUGE leap backward. Ah well, so long as everyone else thinks this is idiotic as well, I guess there is hope.

Well, Connecticut refined their Civil Union act into a proper gay marriage bill, and they even stipulate that they're not forcing churches to do anything they don't want to. I'm cool with that because we're putting free market principles to work here: ostensibly the more progressive churches will experience a membership surge if they are willing to accept homosexuals, and the less tolerant churches will be left in the fucking dark ages. That, or they'll turn into outright hate groups, and then the FBI will have their asses under 24/7 surveillance. Works for me.

I don't get how such a large percentage of people consider one throwaway passage from the bible to be more important than the rest of the bible and the ten commandments combined. I mean, there are passages in Leviticus that stipulate what bugs God wants you to eat. There are passages wherein God mandates the length of your beard. There's even a passage which dictates you are not to set foot in a church if you are missing any gonads. No really, you can look that up. So why aren't the members of Lance Armstrong's church staging angry protests?

Furthermore, how come the debate is never framed in the context of "how would you feel if an angry mob told you that you had no right to be married to your husband/wife, the person you love more than anyone in the entire world, because they misinterpreted a sentence from a book written centuries before you were even born?" Oh that's right, because that context reveals how stupid this issue is. Aren't you glad you've got an erudite motherfucker like me on your side?
