Sweeney What??

I took Mika to a sneak preview of "Sweeney Todd" last night.

Big mistake.

I am familiar with the original musical. I found it dark, gruesome, but well written with lovely music. I even found it amusing at points (Angela Landsbury was perfectly daffy as Mrs. Lovitt). I was all excited for the new Tim Burton production of the movie.

Until about halfway through the movie when he kills his first victim, that is.

In the stage show, they do a lot of suggestive killing, which makes it stomach-able.

In the movie, they show every stinking gory detail about throat slitting . . .and it gets old and nauseating after a while. The music and the story suddenly take a complete back seat to the throat slitting and the "how much blood can we have spray out of this guy in this scene" factor.

It wore thin on my nerves and made Mika quite ill. He doesn't handle blood very well. I have been talking "Sweeney Todd" up to him for months now, and now I don't think he even wants to hear the name again.

I'm not basing my opinion totally off the fact that my boyfriend wanted to kill me by the end of the movie. I was truly disappointed by the fact that they sacrificed the story and the music for the throat slitting moments.

Also, the little twit they have playing Anthony (Jamie Campbell Bower : who is going to be dodging gay accusations some day) is so odd looking and has less than appropriate pipes for my personal favourite ballad "Johanna". The audience was laughing every time he came on the screen to sing because it looked like he was having a seizure every time he opened his mouth.

In the plus column - Johnny Depp was his usual self - a mixture of Jack Sparrow's accent and Ed Wood's mentality. He's *and I'm going to catch flack for this one* become a one trick pony. The only thing is that he really did play out Todd's decent into madness (which seems to come out of nowhere . . I'll have to get my hands on the original Broadway copy of the show and consult it). He does a decent job singing, but ends up looking like Jack White from the White Stripes for most of the movie.

Helena Bonham Carter was great. She doesn't quite belt it out like Angela Landsbury or Patti LuPone, but her acting was solid. My only complaint would be that she drained the fun out of Mrs. Lovitt. There were moments of it, but I think she harped on the weird too much.

Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall as the Judge and Beedle respectively were good. Neither can really sing, but they chopped out 60% of the music anyhow.

*Sigh* I don't recommend this movie, I'm afraid. I don't have to see it again. They butchered (hah . .no pun intended) one of my favourite musicals and made it into a slasher film ala Hostel. But, then again, I'm not going to be able to stop every foaming Johnny Depp fan from seeing this one either. I'm sure it will draw a huge box office from the pre-teen crowd (80% of the audience was 17-19 year old girls last night and all of them had their high school fag with them) and be very popular with people obsessed with seeing Johnny Depp play the same character over and over again.

I give it a ** out of ***** for capturing the filth of period London accurately, having great costumes, and being a great movie until they kill Borat . . .I mean . . Sacha Baron Cohen.

Toeing the line

Hey everybody. You know me. You know I love music. I make no bones about it . . music is my life. I get real excited when the artists that I enjoy release new material, and then I get real disappointed when that material doesn't live up to the expectations I have in my head. Case in point, Tori Amos' last two releases are simply lost on my shuffle right now. I don't go actively seeking out "Cars and Guitars" or "My Posse Can Do" so to speak.

So, let's turn over to an artist who blew me away with her debut album. KT Tunstall, the Scottish guitar totin' riot grrrl. "Eye to the Telescope" was on a loop in my car for months. I couldn't get enough. I wasn't even (and still am not) burned out on "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree". It makes me smile. KT rocked my socks, and I was thrilled that there was some new music out that I enjoyed.

Flash forward to yesterday, the release of KT's sophomore album "Drastic Fantastic". The single "Hold On" was an immediate catch for me. It was thumping, it had good guitar hooks and a catchy melody. Mostly, I was a fan of the percussive sound. It hearkened back to her signature sound from "Telescope". I just finished purchasing "Drastic" on i-Tunes today, and I gotta say, I'm really ambivalent about it, and that makes me sorta sad inside. I had high hopes for KT's second album, because it she totally blew me away with her first. I'm not panning it, the songs are solid and some are very nice, but something is lacking. The sound is very glossy, very studio. The only true rocker on the album is "Hold On". The other songs are just adult contempo stuff. I'm sure it will grow on me after a few more listens, but I'm still not sure what's so "drastic" or "fantastic" about this CD. I'll have to give it a little more time I'm sure. I'll bet the live versions of these songs will rock. Hopefully, I will get to see her live this time around...

My over all opinion is a 4 out of 5 . . .. for being almost too adult contempo.

Glorious Sunday Morning

Took Mika to the Ledges, and if my stupid camera had the right USB cable, I'd be able to show you the pictures. Alas, I was not given the right cable. Blah.

I think I have him talked into a long evening on Thursday, accompanied by a long morning Friday. Before there are any "ooh la la's" and the like . .we've decided to wait. I know - a foreign concept. However, this one is definitely worth waiting for :-) It could be a very sleepless night. We'll see.

I don't want to have to end my perfect day with work, but I need some perfect money to put in the perfect bank so that I can maintain my perfect lifestyle.

ok . .that's all I got :-)

Life is pretty damn good

Things are going very well right now. I've finally got everything I need at my apartment - well, save for a dresser and my music shelf, but they're coming - and will be having my "housewarming on Friday, October 19th. If you can read this, you're pretty much invited, spread the word ;-)

Work is going well. I like it so much better than Ruby Tuesday because A) The money is way better and B) There is never any question as to whether or not we are going to be busy. We are always busy. Plus, I've made some really freakin cool friends.

I don't miss Mt Pleasant at all. Only a hand full of people really. And they know who they are.

I'm taking Mika out to Grand Ledge tomorrow to the Ledges. I plan on taking lots of pictures so you all can see him, and what I've been up to. Mika is awesome. He is amazing. I can't wait to spend more time with him and find out what makes him tick. The best part is that his mother is very old world Italian and is a practising Strega. That is old school Italian witch for those who don't know. I can't freakin wait to meet her.

Anyhoo . .I need to haul my cookies to bed as he will be here at 9 a.m. so we can have a nice long day together before I have to work. Night everyone!
